Parking Garage Nature Study

June 9, 2011 by Sarah

Yesterday the kids and I went to run some errands. We went to Target, ate lunch at IHOP, and hit the grocery store, all with only minor meltdowns from the smallest one. When we came home and circled our way down 2 levels to park the car, I quickly realized that we had too much in the trunk to carry, even with 5 able hands (1 of mine I have to use to carry Helen).  So I asked Thomas and Sadie to run up and get the bell cart so we could load it up and just make one trip upstairs.

As I not-so-patiently waited for them (this was the time when Helen was voicing her displeasure at not being in the bed yet and it was a little hot down there and I couldn’t imagine what was taking so long– I know, I know, patience is something I need to work on) I started wandering around a little.

I looked up at the ceiling (there is a big fan next to it that is NOT plugged in) and noticed something a little familiar, but…. could it be…. here?….. how did it get here?

It was a little brown furry bat. Hanging upside in the famous bat pose and looking quite dead. I guess it probably is alive, but I haven’t seen it fly and it was there again today.

Today, when we pulled into our section of the garage I saw something small and furry scuttle across the floor. Then it found something to eat and sat munching as I drove past. I let Thomas and Sadie go look at it, warning them not to get bitten. When we met back up at the elevators they informed me it probably was a mouse but that it had 2 brown stripes running down its back.

We had a lot of laundry to do today and they are putting asphalt down on the street outside so I’m not inclined to take the kids out for a walk  and so I’m calling that our Nature Study.
