Here, at least. This house has been our home for the past 11 years and we’ve made our family traditions here. We attend service at our church, during which people stand up and say what blessing God has done in their lives this year. I am thankful for our church family. They are our heart family.
We cook my grandmother’s dressing- well, Mom did that this year and it was fabulous. We roast a bird; I mess up the gravy and my mom rescues me. We sit around and drink wine and relax with each other. We are just, I don’t know, Together As a Family. And that’s comforting and soothing for busy times.
And this year I looked around the table at these people I love and care for, these people who sometimes make me crazy, and I realized…. there are people who I will say good bye to in March and it may be our final good-bye. There are people who will have babies and other people will make the bird, or maybe they won’t, but either way I won’t be there to know. And yes, I’ll make Grandmother’s dressing, but we’ll be continents away from the people we normally share it with.
But maybe we’ll dine with others new to us… maybe other people will get to hear about what a truly great woman my grandmother was when they eat the dressing made from her recipe. And I guess the good thing about traditions is that they don’t have to revolve around this table, or this kitchen, or this home. They can and do change with the people involved, and they will still be our traditions in the sense that we will continue on making our family memories regardless of where we are when we make them.
