The Royal Day is Here

April 29, 2011 by Sarah

And memories abound in this week’s FS blog round-up. As well they should, because isn’t that what weddings do for us, whether they are held in Las Vegas with drunken uncles shouting “At least she ain’t nekked!” (that story from a dear friend’s fun family) or that of a beloved sister or even, as it turns out, the wedding ceremony of 2 people who we don’t know, but carry warm wishes for.  Weddings give us a chance to reflect on what marriage means to us, and they remind us of other weddings we have played the part of “witness” in.  Nomads by Nature recalls their time in The Netherlands and the orange-clad partying that happens throughout the country as part of Queen’s Day on the 30th of April.

That happens to be my sister’s birthday as well, and I found myself reminiscing about her wedding day and other significant times we’ve spent together as I roamed the aisles of the local Hallmark store.  Happy Birthday, Mary! May you have a great cake and a good laugh as you celebrate you!

Another by-product of royal weddings it seems is that they elicit a feeling of patriotism and unity, even in regions of the world that are not always marked as such, and I’d like to add that they often do that at a local familial level as well.  Sadie Abroad broadens the western perspective of royalty by remarking on the love of a people for their King and Queen, both in Saudi Arabia and in Thailand and will be enjoying a day off, pizza in hand, watching the wedding on tv.

Of course, the Brits love their Queen and I expect a good many of them will be turning out for the festivities, as well as making their own forms of merry tomorrow.  From what I can tell of the television, even though we sloughed off the British monarchy over 200 years ago, there remains a hearty fascination for, and perhaps even a jealousy for the idea of a monarchy here in the USA. Nearly every tv channel is either hosting programs to speculate on Kate’s dress, the food the guests will eat, and what the flowers might look like or serving up footage of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles 30 years ago, along with all the peripheral remembrances that one can handle. I have to say, not only am I not avoiding such programs, I actually like them, much to the disdain of my poor husband. He has a kind of countdown going to the day after the wedding, when he hopes the intensity of the wedding revelry will slowdown.

Kate, who I just realized shares a name with about-to-be Princess Kate, over at Pulling Stakes entertains us all and shows off her “productive.ish” skills in a fun blog post this week including adorable puppies. So, if you feel like you need a break from All Things Royal, check her out!

Hold the Presses!!!! I just learned we have royalty in our midst! Check out 3rdCultureChildren this week to discover how learning about one’s genealogical history might be way more fascinating than it sounds. And, bonus, our last name is Green, so maybe we too could be royalty, or at least be related to the Mirandas! Now isn’t that a thought?!

And finally, in news that is actually pertinent to many FS families, tomorrow the evacuation from Cairo is being lifted. That means that families like Sherwood Family Nonsense  finally get to go home and be reunited with loved ones.  And that, my friends is better than a piece of royal wedding cake. But, Mama Sherwood surely deserves one!

I’m adding a few others to our round-up… Ogles and Observations wonders about what all moms with daughters wonder about– specifically how much princess is too much and what does it mean to be a princess?

Heather  reports on why the interest in former British-ruled Guyana, which proves an interesting read even from the American perspective. Thanks for your contributions, and don’t worry about being late– that’s usually how I roll. 😉
