Today the high was 32 degrees and my kids were out playing for at least 3 hours (though not consecutively.) Travis got their bikes put back together and they got to ride around the compound, Sadie riding her bike all on her own– with no training wheels or help from us for the first time ever.
Later in the day they all went out back, setting up the tent and playing in it and with a wardrobe box that we haven’t put out to the recycling dumpster yet. They were cold but didn’t mind.
Until they suddenly got really cold (maybe it finally sunk into their bones?) The temp was falling rapidly as the sun made its slight dip back into the night. It really only peeks its head above the horizon for a few hours of full sunshine and clear sky before it prepares for nightfall again.
Once the cold hit them, it hit hard and they were whining and not wanting to clean up the stuff they had brought out with them. Typical no matter what the weather.
I stood at the back door, shoved their hats and gloves back on and turned them back into the cold to clean up. I bet next time they are content playing with whatever leaves they can find.
Tomorrow’s high is 23 and we really need to go to the farmer’s market. That is a trip that equals about 1.5 hours outside. For Houstonians, we’re doing really well coping with the weather, but after all, it is only fall and the highs being below 32 still scares me.
I have to keep pushing us out in it. If we cave in to “cold” now, we’ll not make it when winter finally comes.
But maybe it’s not too early to find the box that has all our teas in it…
